Grissom arrives with new evidence that helps them catch the killer and put to rest what happened to the missing boy from six years ago. Part 1 began on CSI (8X06) “Who and What.” ========================== WITHOUT A TRACE 6X06: WHERE & WHY (2) ========================== FADE IN: [EXT. DESERT HIGHWAY ROAD -- DAY] LEGEND: 2 HOURS LATER (A man looks under the hood as he works to fix the leak in his car. The radio runs in the background.) REPORTER: (from radio) We have unconfirmed reports that the suspect, Terry Lee Wicker, is wanted for recent murders in the Las Vegas area. But for now, authorities will only say that he is armed and extremely dangerous and that they are very concerned for the ten-year-old boy abducted yesterday outside a school in Boulder City. Reporter Kelly Walker was there for this morning's press conference. KELLY WALKER (REPORTER): (from radio) Boulder City Mayor Diego Nunez delivered a stark assessment of the suspect this morning, saying that this child abduction was not Wicker's first. DIEGO NUNEZ: (from radio) The FBI told us Wicker kidnapped a four-year-old in New York City six years ago and the boy hasn't been seen since. (A MOJAVE EXPRESS bus passes by.) [INT. BUS – NIGHT] (The bus is full of passengers.) DIEGO NUNEZ: (from radio) We want Kobe Farentino back safe and sound in Boulder City and we're not going to stop until he is, but we're gonna need the public's help. KELLY WALKER (REPORTER): According to the mayor, Wicker is six feet tall, thin with brown hair. He is 35 years of age. If you see him ... (Terry Lee Wicker sits in the seat next to the sleeping blonde-haired boy. He is listening to the radio news report. He turns his radio off and pulls out his earplugs. Kobe Farentino sleeps in the seat next to him.) (Wicker walks up to the driver.) TERRY LEE WICKER: Excuse me, sir. BUS DRIVER: Uh-huh. TERRY LEE WICKER: My son's not feeling well. I think you need to get him off the bus, see if I can find a doctor. (The bus driver stops the bus and opens the door. Wicker carries Kobe and leaves the bus.) (He steps down and puts Kobe down next to him. The bus doors close.) (Terry Lee Wicker and Kobe Farentino vanish.) CUT TO: [EXT. (ARIZONA) STREET / USED CAR LOT -- DAY] LEGEND: HILLSIDE, AZ (The SUV pulls up and parks. Jack and Grissom step out. They meet the sheriff on the scene.) JACK: Jack Malone, FBI. GRISSOM: Gil Grissom, Las Vegas Crime Lab. (They shake hands.) SHERIFF: Nobody touched anything except Lenny. He got here about 10:00. Saw the bus to the gate at auto lot. Realized all the keys in the lockbox were missing. JACK: Does Lenny know which car was stolen? (They look at Lenny leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed and hat tipped over his face.) SHERIFF: He's not much of a record keeper. JACK: Any kind of a surveillance system here? SHERIFF: No, sir. Think this Wicker's involved? JACK: Bus driver said he dropped him off nearby. Do you know if any of the businesses around have security cameras that would catch a piece of the street? SHERIFF: See what I can dig up. JACK: That'd be great. Thanks. (The sheriff leaves. Grissom looks around and notices a particular car door has a spot of dirt wiped off as if someone rubbed up against it. Grissom stands with his back to the car and sees that it’s probable.) JACK: So what do you think? GRISSOM: I think somebody rubbed up against this door recently. This is where the car was. JACK: Right. (Grissom looks down on the ground and finds something.) GRISSOM: "Rift of..." Drift off. OTC sleep medication. JACK: That'd be enough to subdue the kid. GRISSOM: Yeah, but nobody sleeps forever. CUT TO: [CU: WHITEBOARD] (PUSH IN on a photo of TERRY LEE WICKER.) FLASH TO: (Two photos of KOBE FARENTINO, 7A-NY899142 and of JASON TAYLOR, 7A-NY509---.) SMASH TO. END OF TEASER ROLL TITLE CREDITS (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN: [EXT. COMMUNTIY (STOCK) -- DAY] LEGEND: HILLSIDE, AZ (A cell phone rings.) [EXT. (ARIZONA) USED CAR LOT -- DAY] (Jack answers the phone.) JACK: (to phone) Malone. INTERCUT WITH: [INT. FBI – BULLPEN – DAY] (Elena, Martin and Vivian sit at the conference table.) MARTIN: (to phone) Are you two still in Hillside? JACK: No, it's just me. Gil Grissom's headed back to Vegas to finish processing Gina Farentino's car. What's going on? MARTIN: It's more than likely that Wicker's gonna abandon the car he stole, so we're checking rail yards and airports within a 200-mile radius. JACK: Any luck finding any known associates? VIVIAN: Well, Wicker has a sister listed as an emergency contact at his last known job. We're trying to track her down. JACK: What kind of work did he do? ELENA: He worked maintenance on the railroad and got fired about nine and a half years ago. JACK: That fits perfectly. Explains why he travels on trains. We have a home address? MARTIN: He had an apartment in Astoria about ten years ago, but a neighbor said he disappeared after Kobe was born and then Gina moved out two weeks after that. JACK: That fits the timetable of Jason's adoption. VIVIAN: Yeah, and since we don't know the identity of his birth parents, it's possible that Kobe is Jason Taylor. JACK: You should bring in his sister, see if she can confirm it. CUT TO: [EXT. LAS VEGAS CITY (STOCK) – DAY] LEGEND: LAS VEGAS, NV [INT. CSI – GARAGE -- DAY] (Grissom examines the back seat in Gina Farentino’s car. He finds some WALLER’S CHEWING gum and a paper clip on the car floor. He snaps a photo of the gum.) (He finds a folded photo of Kobe in his soccer uniform and holding a soccer ball.) (He puts the middle armrest down and finds a folded envelope from HEMISPHERE. It’s a gift certificate envelope. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM.) CUT TO: [EXT. (NEVADA) CITY (STOCK) – DAY] LEGEND: BOULDER CITY, NV [EXT. SCHOOL -- DAY] (Jack interviews Mr. Polchek from Kobe Farentino’s school. He looks at a photo.) POLCHEK: Yeah, that's definitely him. That's the man that picked Kobe up. (He gives the photo back to Jack.) JACK: And you just let him? POLCHEK: Normally, Kobe walks home. He didn't need permission to leave school grounds. JACK: Did he seem alarmed? POLCHEK: No, no. But why would he? The man who come by the school earlier that day with Kobe's mother. (Quick flashback to: Gina Farentino and Terry Lee Wicker stand on the outside of the playground fence. They watch the children play basketball.) TERRY LEE WICKER: Is that him in the green shirt? GINA FARENTINO: No. (Mr. Polchek joins them.) POLCHEK: Hey, Miss Farentino. GINA FARENTINO: Hi, Mr. Polchek. (Mr. Polchek turns and shouts for Kobe.) POLCHEK: (shouts) Kobe, your mom's here! GINA FARENTINO: No, you don't have to interrupt him. (Kobe turns around.) POLCHEK: (shouts) Kobe, come here! (He turns back to them.) It's lunch. I'm not interrupting anything. (Kobe turns and runs toward his mom.) KOBE: Mom, I got a "Perfect" on my history test. TERRY LEE WICKER: Hey, Kobe. GINA FARENTINO: This is your uncle. TERRY LEE WICKER: Terry. GINA FARENTINO: You know, from back East. He's a friend of the family. TERRY LEE WICKER: Your mom tells me you're quite the artist. KOBE: (shrugs) I'm okay. TERRY LEE WICKER: I'm not in town very long, Mr. Polchek. Could I go look at Kobe's pictures? GINA FARENTINO: I'm sure we'll have time for that later. TERRY LEE WICKER: I'd like to see them now. POLCHEK: We got about 20 minutes before class. Why don't you go through there to the office? Tell them I said it was okay. (Wicker heads toward the office. Gina looks scared. Kobe picks up on it as he looks worriedly at his mom.) END FLASHBACK. POLCHEK: Kobe's a good boy, but he needs a male influence in his life. I thought an uncle was a good thing. JACK: Did he talk to anyone later? POLCHEK: His friend Angelica. JACK: I'm gonna need to speak to her. POLCHEK: Of course. Gina must be worried to death. (Jack doesn’t say anything.) CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) – DAY] [INT. FBI – BULLPEN -- DAY] (Vivian, Danny and Samantha watch the security video from the Arizona used car lot.) DANNY: All right, this is 11:50 this morning. SAMANTHA: No front plate. DANNY: No. Arizona, not a requirement. (Samantha zooms in on the blank front plate.) SAMANTHA: I didn't see the boy. VIVIAN: Well, maybe he's asleep in the back seat. (She zooms in on the back seat.) SAMANTHA: Maybe. What is that, a late '80s Buick? VIVIAN: That would be my guess. SAMANTHA: All right, I'll update the APB. (Samantha reaches for the phone. Danny and Vivian get up and step away.) DANNY: Viv, we know Wicker abducted Jason Taylor six years ago in New York. Now, if Kobe's our kid, how did Wicker lose track of him and then have to abduct him again? VIVIAN: Well, maybe Gina was in on it originally, but killing the baby-sitter wasn't part of the plan. DANNY: So she got scared and ran. VIVIAN: Wouldn't you? DANNY: She shouldn't have stopped running. CUT TO: [EXT. SCHOOL GROUNDS -- DAY] (Jack talks with Anjelica while her mother stands nearby and listens.) JACK: Mr. Polchek tells me that you're Kobe's best friend. ANJELICA: Best school friend. JACK: You're not friends outside of school? ANJELICA: He plays soccer. I play piano. (Jack smiles at the comparison.) JACK: Um, did he say anything about the man that he met yesterday? (Anjelica turns and looks at her mom.) ANJELICA’S MOTHER: It's okay, honey. ANJELICA: He said it was a secret. JACK: You know, Angelica, there, there are some secrets that are not so good, and I'm just trying to make sure this is not one of them. ANJELICA: Kobe said he was gonna go look at the art projects. (Quick flashback to: [INT. SCHOOL CLASSROOM -- DAY] Kobe points to his painting of a boy kicking a soccer ball at the goal.) KOBE: That's on my game last week. I scored a goal. It wasn't like the winning goal or anything. TERRY LEE WICKER: Well, still, that's ... KOBE: Yeah, it was cool. TERRY LEE WICKER: I wish I could have seen it. (Wicker glances around. He sits on the desk.) Be nice to hang around together, wouldn't it? KOBE: I guess. TERRY LEE WICKER: You know, kick a ball, eat hamburgers, that kind of thing? KOBE: You're gonna have to ask my mom. TERRY LEE WICKER: (nods) All right. Um ... your mom doesn't think this is the right time for me to tell you this, but..um ... KOBE: Tell me what? TERRY LEE WICKER: I owe you a big apology, Kobe. I ran out on you and your mom. I'm your dad. KOBE: My dad's dead. TERRY LEE WICKER: I understand why she told you that. She was just trying to protect you, but look at me. I'm definitely not dead. Listen, you can't tell anyone we had this talk, not even your mom. Not yet. KOBE: Why not? TERRY LEE WICKER: Well, I'm setting up this vacation for the three of us, and if we tell her, she might not want us to go right now. So you want to go on vacation, don't you? KOBE: Where are we going? (Wicker walks over to the globe. He points.) TERRY LEE WICKER: First stop's here. Maybe we'll do some camping. You like camping, don't you? (Kobe nods.) TERRY LEE WICKER: Yeah, me, too. I think it's gonna be a great adventure. BACK TO SCENE. JACK: Did he say where they were gonna go? ANJELICA: Tucson. CUT TO: [EXT. (ARIZONA) TOWN (STOCK) – DAY] LEGEND: TUCSON, AZ [EXT. DIRT ROAD -- DAY] (The train tracks run through the dirt road crossing. A couple of police cars are there at the scene. Jack pulls up and gets out. He meets up with Deputy Wheelock, who briefs him.) JACK: Jack Malone, FBI. DEPUTY WHEELOCK: How you doing? Deputy Wheelock. The Buick from your APB's right over there. I think we may have found something of interest next to this structure. (They walk over to the structure.) DEPUTY WHEELOCK: There's some dirt here that's been recently disturbed. JACK: Do me a favor, will ya? Go have yourself a cup of coffee. DEPUTY WHEELOCK: Yes, sir. (The deputy leaves. Jack puts his gloves on and pushes the dirt away with his foot. He picks up an old tin can and uses it to push the dirt away.) (He uncovers a small skull. This isn’t good.) (Jack’s phone rings.) JACK: (to phone) Yeah. INTERCUT WITH: [INT. FBI – BULLPEN – DAY] MARTIN: (to phone) Wicker bought two roundtrip tickets from Tucson to New York. The gate agent screwed up and didn't realize he let Wicker on the plane until he got home and saw him on the news. JACK: What time did the plane land? MARTIN: About an hour ago. We sent units, but he was nowhere to be found. JACK: (sighs) Okay. Thanks. (Jack hangs up and turns around.) FADE OUT. (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) -- DAY] JACK: (v.o.) There's a reason he came back. [INT. FBI – BULLPEN – DAY] (Jack is back in the bullpen. He meets with Vivian and Martin at the conference table.) VIVIAN: Well, from what we've been able to find out, he spent a lot of time in the area, and I suppose there's comfort in the familiar. JACK: Yeah, but he's a fugitive. It doesn't make any sense for him to come back to a place where he'd be identified. VIVIAN: Could be he thinks the Vegas luck rubbed off on him. MARTIN: Well, we were able to get a hold of his sister. (looks at watch) She should be here in about 20 minutes. (The phone rings. Martin gets up to answer it.) MARTIN: Hopefully, she can tell us where he might have gone. JACK: Does she know he's here? MARTIN: No. She hasn't talked to him in a long time. (to phone) Command post. Yeah, sure. Thanks. (hangs up) (to Jack) That was security. CSI Grissom from Las Vegas is here. JACK: New York here? MARTIN: Lobby here. He's on his way up. TIME CUT TO: [INT. FBI – 12th FLOOR HALLWAY – DAY] (The elevator bell dings and the doors open. Grissom pushes the evidence containers into the hallway. Jack walks up to him.) JACK: (surprised) Grissom. What the hell are you doing here? GRISSOM: Hello, Jack. JACK: You know, when I asked that the evidence to be transported to New York, I didn't expect you to deliver it personally. GRISSOM: These are my boxes. I want to make sure I get them back. Also, I have news. (He opens his case and takes out some clipped papers.) GRISSOM: When they exhumed the child's body in Tucson, it was clear from the state of decomp that it had been in the ground a long time. (He gives the papers to Jack.) GRISSOM: I also found a circular stain on the clothing around the child's neck. Whatever made the stain had been removed. JACK: And what would that be? GRISSOM: I don't know yet. I have more work to do. JACK: Uh-huh. GRISSOM: Would you ... uh ... have some place where I could do it? JACK: We have a ... (Jack looks behind him.) We have a lab in the base ... (He turns and sees Elena step out into the hallway. He calls her over.) JACK: Oh, Elena. Agent Delgado, I'd like to meet Las Vegas CSI Gil Grissom. ELENA: Nice to meet you. GRISSOM: Nice to meet you, too. (They shake hands.) JACK: Would you mind ... uh ... escorting him to the lab? ELENA: The ... um ... ? (She points down.) JACK: Mm-hmm. ELENA: Oh, okay. Um ... let's take the rear elevators. (She steps away. Grissom looks at Jack, then follows Elena out.) CUT TO: [INT. FBI – CONFERENCE ROOM -- DAY] (Samantha talks with Sylvia Wicker.) SYLVIA WICKER: I never even met the baby. Terry and Gina were married before he was born, and the relationship ended almost immediately. SAMANTHA: Your brother was introduced to Kobe as an uncle, so I'm assuming they were estranged. SYLVIA WICKER: (sighs) Terry ... has a hard time connecting to people. Do you really think he took Kobe? SAMANTHA: Oh, yeah, we're positive. SYLVIA WICKER: Well, I'm sure Gina's scared, but there's no way he's going to hurt their son. SAMANTHA: How long since you've seen your brother? SYLVIA WICKER: Um ... must have been about six years ago. (Quick flashback to: [EXT. STREET] Terry walks across the street and calls out to Sylvia, who is working on her potted plants.) TERRY LEE WICKER: Sylvia. SYLVIA WICKER: Hey! Terry. TERRY LEE WICKER: Hey. How are you? SYLVIA WICKER: Good. (They hug.) TERRY LEE WICKER: Good. SYLVIA WICKER: It's been two hours since you called. I was beginning to think you weren't coming by. TERRY LEE WICKER: I just took me a little while to get here. I brought you something. SYLVIA WICKER: Aw, you didn't need to do that. TERRY LEE WICKER: You're my sister. (He gives her a wrapped kerchief. Inside is a turquoise necklace.) SYLVIA WICKER: Wow. TERRY LEE WICKER: You like it? SYLVIA WICKER: Yeah. I just ... I just think you should use the money to take care of yourself. TERRY LEE WICKER: I'm fine. SYLVIA WICKER: Well, thanks. Hey, before we go in, I just ... I need you to know that I'm seeing someone now. TERRY LEE WICKER: Oh, yeah? SYLVIA WICKER: Roger. He's got two kids. TERRY LEE WICKER: That's great. SYLVIA WICKER: Yeah. But that means that you can't stay with us. Not this time. We just don't have room. We can't have you hanging around for two weeks only to disappear without me knowing where you're going. The kids wouldn't know what to make of that. TERRY LEE WICKER: I'll find someplace else. SYLVIA WICKER: Terry ... I just think you got to get your life together. You were so happy when you were with Gina. TERRY LEE WICKER: I screwed it up. SYLVIA WICKER: So it didn't work out. Try again. (Terry turns around and leaves.) SYLVIA WICKER: You know, go back to the therapist you were seeing and figure out what happened. TERRY LEE WICKER: I better go. (He walks away.) BACK TO SCENE. SYLVIA WICKER: He called collect once more to ask if he could come by and stay. And I said no. He hung up, and that's the last I heard from him. SAMANTHA: Do you have any idea what therapist he saw? SYLVIA WICKER: Someone through the union. I don't know his name. SAMANTHA: Okay. I'd like your permission to get your phone records. (She puts the form in front of her.) See if we can figure out where he could have called you from. You just need to sign right here. SYLVIA WICKER: You know ... Terry was in jail once for stealing. Has he done something like that again? SAMANTHA: We have strong evidence linking him to recent murders in the Las Vegas area. SYLVIA WICKER: What? Um ... oh, my God. No, that can't be true. (Jack watches them through the glass walls. He leaves.) CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) – DAY] [INT. FBI – BASEMENT – DAY] (Grissom examines the child’s remains on the table. He has the images on the monitor along with Jason Taylor’s photo. He snaps pictures of the remains.) (Samantha walks up to him.) GRISSOM: You approach with stealth. SAMANTHA: (teases) Something I picked up in 'Nam. (Grissom stares at her blankly.) Um, I'm Samantha Spade. You called upstairs. GRISSOM: Oh, right. I mentioned the gift card that I found in my report, but I thought maybe your team would like to have the actual evidence itself. (Grissom gives the bagged evidence to Samantha.) SAMANTHA: Thank you. Um, you get any prints off of it? GRISSOM: Just smudges, small ones. Probably belonged to a child. SAMANTHA: You know, I hope you won't take this personally, but it smells down here. GRISSOM: Does it? SAMANTHA: Of chemicals. (The computer chirps. Grissom turns back to the computer. It shows a MATCH FOUND.) SAMANTHA: Okay, then. Well, it was nice meeting you. (Samantha turns and leaves.) CUT TO: [INT. FBI – JACK’S OFFICE -- DAY] (Jack is at his desk when Grissom walks in.) GRISSOM: Jack. I ... uh ... checked the dental records. The body from Tucson is Jason Taylor. JACK: Right. GRISSOM: There were no broken bones, no blunt-force trauma, no obvious signs of violence. But without tissue, I can't determine COD. JACK: I doubt the cause of death is going to be any consolation to his parents. GRISSOM: No. I'm about to run a 3D algorithm on the shirt fragment to see what was around his neck. I'll get you an image as soon as I have one. JACK: Thank you. (Grissom nods and leaves.) (HOLD ON Jack, who is saddened by the news.) CUT TO: [INT. FBI – BULLPEN – DAY] (Martin shows Danny the map with the red pins on it.) MARTIN: These are murders that fit his pattern: victims near railroads, women covered with blankets. Now here's what's interesting. When Wicker was able to communicate with his sister, he would go by and visit her or call her after every murder, but he'd murder with less frequency. After their break in communication, the frequency of his crimes increased. DANNY: Now how long after that visit did he kidnap Jason and kill the babysitter? MARTIN: Three days. Now Gina used to live in that neighborhood while Wicker was in jail. If Kobe had the same babysitter as Jason, maybe Wicker went by there looking for his son. DANNY: Well, he obviously had some emotional attachment to Jason. If not, he wouldn't have buried him the way he did. MARTIN: Yeah. He thought Jason was his son. He buried him with something important around his neck. And since he went back for it, maybe whatever it is, he's using it to make a connection with Kobe. DANNY: Hopefully, this buys us some time. (Vivian walks in.) VIVIAN: That gift card that Grissom turned us on to was swiped in Astoria. MARTIN: Where? VIVIAN: Welling and 30th. MARTIN: Now, hold on a second. (He goes to his desk to look up the file.) You know, Wicker lived out in Astoria in '96. I'm pretty sure about that. Let's see ... it's right here. Yeah, 732 North Hampton. CUT TO: [EXT. ASTORIA COMMUNITY (STOCK) – DAY] [INT. WICKER’S RESIDENCE -- DAY] (The door bursts open. Martin and Jack rush into the apartment, their guns raised. The place appears to be empty, but the television set is on.) (Martin checks the back room.) (Jack pushes the tape into the VCR. It’s a home video. Terry is holding a baby.) WICKER: (from video) Is that Mommy? Say hi, Mommy. (In the other room, Martin checks the closet. He pushes the clothes on the hangers aside and looks down. He sees something.) (There’s blood on the doorframe.) (He kneels and pulls away the jacket on the floor and finds a dead body.) MARTIN: Jack. Got a body in here. (Jack leaves the video and heads over to Martin.) (HOLD ON the television set with Terry and the baby.) FADE OUT. (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN: [INT. WICKER’S RESIDENCE -- DAY] (Grissom snaps a photo of the dead body in the bedroom closet. Jack stands over him.) JACK: My dad went to New York and all I got was this stupid murder weapon. (Grissom picks up the bloodied Empire State Building souvenir.) GRISSOM: You know, this fits Wicker's MO: home invasion, find a weapon on-site, kill the resident. Except this time, he left the weapon. (Jack and Grissom step out of the bedroom.) JACK: I don't think Wicker came here to kill. This is where he lived when Kobe was an infant and his life was the most stable. My guess is, he's trying to recreate that. MARTIN: Hey, Grissom. We got lipstick. (He points to the cup on the counter.) JACK: According to the landlord, Weiss didn't have a girlfriend. GRISSOM: Maybe Wicker does. (Grissom takes a photo of the cup.) CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) – DAY] [INT. FBI – CONFERENCE ROOM -- DAY] (Vivian and Martin meet with Dr. Ron Forsythe.) DR. RON FORSYTHE: I had no idea. I haven't seen Terry in years. Part of me always worried about what became of him. VIVIAN: Well, we subpoenaed your records, and they show that you treated Mr. Wicker about nine and a half years ago. DR. RON FORSYTHE: That seems right. MARTIN: Did he mention Kobe in your sessions? DR. RON FORSYTHE: Yes, frequently. What was his wife's name again? VIVIAN: Gina. DR. RON FORSYTHE: When Gina had the baby, Terry had a steady job. He seemed stable and happy maybe for the first time in his life, but it didn't last. When I treated him, he was having difficulty managing his anger and his home situation was deteriorating. (Quick flashback to: [INT. DR. FORSYTHE’S OFFICE] Dr. Forsythe talks with Terry Wicker.) DR. RON FORSYTHE: Let's talk about how you can communicate those feelings of anger. That's why you're here. TERRY WICKER: Let's get it straight: I'm here because that union rep said so. DR. RON FORSYTHE: Considering your outbursts at work, do you disagree with her? TERRY WICKER: Only thing I know is I got this bad feeling inside me and where it wants me to go is nowhere good. DR. RON FORSYTHE: Is this a new feeling? TERRY WICKER: No. Wasn't there when things were going good: Kobe was born, when I worked down at the yard, Regina wasn't all over my ass. DR. RON FORSYTHE: How about before that? Did you have that specific feeling before? TERRY WICKER: (shrugs) Sort of, I did. DR. RON FORSYTHE: Well, if we can find out what caused it, we can stop it. Tell me the first time you felt this way. (Terry is quiet.) DR. RON FORSYTHE: You can't go back to work until I sign off on it. TERRY WICKER: (uncomfortable) Around the time I was a kid. (sighs) My dad used to drag me and my brother to look for buried treasures. He had one of those metal detectors. INSERT: FLASHES OF THE METAL DETECTOR TERRY WICKER: One day he found this medallion thing in the dirt. (They find the gold medallion.) TERRY WICKER: A gold lion. I remember how much I really wanted it. But he always gave the best stuff to my brother. (He gives the medallion to one boy like it’s a medal and he drapes it like a prize around his neck.) TERRY WICKER: (v.o.) Dad was so excited, he ran to the truck to get the camera. (He looks at the medal.) TERRY WICKER: All I could hear was this ... hissing in my ears. (insects hiss) Like those bugs down south, what do they call them? DR. RON FORSYTHE: Cicadas. TERRY WICKER: It kept getting louder and louder. (buzzing gets louder) I just wanted to stop the noise. I found a rock. He never saw it coming. (The little boy is on the ground with his head bleeding.) TERRY WICKER: When I get mad like that ... I don't see straight. (Terry is wearing the gold medallion and necklace.) DR. RON FORSYTHE: What happened to your brother? TERRY WICKER: (chuckles) I was just making that stuff up. I didn't hurt him, okay? Can we find something else to yap about? DR. RON FORSYTHE: Terry, I think you're telling me this because you're afraid you're going to hurt your son or Gina. TERRY WICKER: This is over. (Terry gets up and heads for the door.) DR. RON FORSYTHE: Terry ... TERRY WICKER: Look, I got to go. DR. RON FORSYTHE: Please sit back down. TERRY WICKER: (shouts) I said I got to go! BACK TO SCENE. DR. RON FORSYTHE: I checked with the county sheriff. Their records showed that Terry's brother died from head wounds in an accidental fall. MARTIN: Did you see Wicker again? DR. RON FORSYTHE: No. VIVIAN: Now did the medallion that he was wearing look like this? (She shows him the file photo.) DR. RON FORSYTHE: Well, it was an animal. Yeah, it looks like the same thing. CUT TO: [INT. FBI – BASEMENT – DAY] (Jack finds Grissom in the basement with the little boy’s bones on the table.) JACK: I was told that you wanted to talk to me. GRISSOM: Yeah. I analyzed the lipstick from the cup. The brand name is Chameleon, the color: crimson red. The sample also showed traces of spermicidal lubricant. JACK: Well, the last outgoing call from the murder victim's apartment was to a pager. Three minutes later, Wicker got a return call from a payphone in Battery Park. GRISSOM: You know, in Vegas, we would speculate that that call came from a lady friend. (pause) An escort. (another pause) A hooker. JACK: In New York, we just call them hos. CUT TO: [INT. FBI – CONFERENCE ROOM -- DAY] (Elena and Jack talk with Roxi.) ELENA: Where's Terry Wicker? ROXI: Who's that? (She shows her Terry Wicker’s photo. Jack pours a glass of water and gives it to Roxi.) ELENA: This guy right here. We traced your pager and we got his number. We also know that you called him back on a payphone. (Roxi takes a sip of water and puts the glass down.) ROXI: And if I did? JACK: Excuse me a second. (Jack picks up the glass and shows the lipstick print to Roxi.) JACK: If you did, I'm willing to bet that this lipstick matches the lipstick we found in the apartment along with the fingerprints, and then you can explain to us how you know absolutely nothing about the dead body we found there. ROXI: Hold on. I didn't have anything to do with that. ELENA: So what were you doing? ROXI: When Terry paged me, I thought it was for his usual. (Quick flashback to: [INT. WICKER RESIDENCE] There’s a knock at the front door. Wicker opens the door and Roxi walks in.) ROXI: Hey ... what brings you to town? (She’s carrying a white cup.) TERRY WICKER: Make him stop crying. (She turns and finds Kobe crying on the couch.) ROXI: Oh. Honey, you know I'm not into that kind of thing. TERRY WICKER: Make him a sandwich or something. ROXI: You're gonna pay me a hundred bucks to make the kid a sandwich? (She puts her bag on the counter.) TERRY WICKER: (to Kobe) There's nothing I could do. The guy had to go. KOBE: Why? Why did he ... ? (He grabs Kobe’s shoulder. Kobe’s eyes go wide and he stares at Wicker, scared of him.) TERRY WICKER: Stop crying! (Roxi intervenes.) ROXI: Honey, let the boy go. I'm sure there's something I could do to help you calm down. (She puts her hand on his shoulder and he knocks her away.) TERRY WICKER: I told you to make him a sandwich. ROXI: All right. I'll make him a sandwich. Everyone's gonna get a sandwich. (She heads for the kitchen. Kobe watches Wicker. As soon as Wicker puts his hand on the glass block decoration on the table, Kobe shouts.) KOBE: I know! I know! I know! I know! I know! I know! (Wicker puts the glass block down and turns to Kobe.) TERRY WICKER: You know what? KOBE: I know there's nothing you could do. I'm okay. Tell her to go. And we can watch the tape again. I'd like to watch the tape again. (Kobe is wearing the gold medallion.) BACK TO SCENE. ELENA: That kid saved your life. ROXI: It was a creepy scene. That's why I jammed out of there as soon as I could. You got to believe me; I have no idea what happened. JACK: Any idea where he went? ROXI: I didn't want to know. But I know he was driving. I saw some keys on the counter. JACK: Keys? What kind of keys? ROXI: For a Toyota. CUT TO: [INT. FBI – HALLWAY] (Jack and Elena step out into the hallway.) ELENA: The kid's playing along to stay alive. JACK: Yeah, but Wicker's not stupid. He's gonna figure it out sooner or later. And when he does ... he's not gonna need the kid anymore. FADE OUT. (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) -- DAY] (Martin is at the computer. Danny walks in and heads over to Vivian, who is standing in front of the map.) DANNY: Wicker's been in New York for nearly two days and NYPD lists 28 stolen Toyotas in that time. VIVIAN: Well, we need to narrow it down by borough. Now the apartment where Ed Weiss was killed is near LaGuardia. So let's focus on Queens and work our way out. MARTIN: You know, I'd wait on that. An assault took place thirty minutes ago in Newark and it was linked to a stolen Toyota. The witness ID'd the subjects as Kobe and Wicker. CUT TO: [EXT. NEWARK STREET – DAY] (Danny and Martin talk with Thomas Mitchner, who sits in the back of the open ambulance.) MARTIN: Thomas Mitchner? THOMAS MITCHNER: Yeah. DANNY: You seen these two? THOMAS MITCHNER: Yeah, that's the guy who sliced me. MARTIN: Why don't you tell us what happened. THOMAS MITCHNER: Well, I came to paint the trim on the place here. Needed to move my truck closer, but the car was in the way. I had seen a guy walk away about 20 minutes before, so I talked to the kid. (Quick flashback to: Thomas Mitchner carries his can to the building and ladder. He puts it down, then turns to talk with Kobe.) THOMAS MITCHNER: Hey, kid. I need to offload my compressor. When's your dad coming back? KOBE: (shakes his head) He's not my dad. THOMAS MITCHNER: Okay. Got any idea when he's coming back? KOBE: Not really. THOMAS MITCHNER: Look, I know it's none of my business, but do you need some help? KOBE: I don't know. Maybe you could call my mom. (Terry Wicker returns.) TERRY WICKER: What's going on? THOMAS MITCHNER: I need to park my truck here. TERRY WICKER: I'm leaving right now. THOMAS MITCHNER: Is everything all right here? TERRY WICKER: Yeah. Why wouldn't it be? THOMAS MITCHNER: Well, the kid wants me to call his mom. TERRY WICKER: Kid wants an X-Box, too. Why don't you get him one of those while you're at it? THOMAS MITCHNER: Why don't we just wait and call the police? (Kobe gets out of the car and runs. Wicker starts to chase after him, but Mitchner grabs him to hold him back.) THOMAS MITCHNER: Hold on. TERRY WICKER: Back off! (Wicker stabs Mitchner and hits him in the arm. Mitchner lets him go and Wicker runs after Kobe.) BACK TO SCENE. THOMAS MITCHNER: I called the cops right then. Please tell me that kid is okay. MARTIN: We haven't located him yet, but you probably saved his life. All right, you take care. DANNY: Thank you. (Danny and Martin walk away.) DANNY: You know, Kobe only ran off an hour ago. They might still be in the area. (Martin calls Jack.) JACK: (from phone) Yeah? MARTIN: (to phone) Hey, Jack, it's Martin. It was definitely them. And the boy made a run for it. INTERCUT WITH: [INT. FBI – JACK’S OFFICE] JACK: (to phone) Any violence? MARTIN: (to phone) Terry sliced a witness with a knife. I'm gonna need some support for house-to-house. I'll call it in. JACK: (to phone) Great. Thank you. (Jack hangs up. He talks with Grissom, who is sitting on the other side of his desk.) JACK: Wicker and his son were seen fighting. Apparently, Wicker assaulted the witness and then took off after the kid. Now it's possible that the kid figured out what his father really is. That would shatter Wicker's fantasy. GRISSOM: Wicker doesn't tolerate conflict. Nearly everyone he's had a run-in with has ended up dead. JACK: According to his pattern, he'll kill the kid and jump the next train out of town. GRISSOM: Jack, forget the pattern. He broke the pattern years ago when he had an emotional connection to one of his victims. Wicker took the time to bury Jason Taylor's body. Then he called his sister. CUT TO: [INT. FBI – CONFERENCE ROOM – DAY] (Vivian and Jack talk with Sylvia Wicker.) SYLVIA WICKER: Did you find Kobe? JACK: No, not yet. (Jack and Vivian sit down.) JACK: Ms. Wicker, we're going to need your help. SYLVIA WICKER: What do you mean? JACK: Well, if your brother's patterns remain consistent, we believe that he's going to call you. And when he does, we'd like you to talk to him for as long as possible. SYLVIA WICKER: Oh, my God, did he hurt Kobe? VIVIAN: We're not sure. (She sighs and shakes her head.) SYLVIA WICKER: I've been thinking this whole time about my brother, and there's just no way he would've done those things. He just wouldn't. VIVIAN: Ms. Wicker, I'd like to show you some pictures. (Vivian puts the file photos of the women on the table. In each photo, the women are wearing various pieces of jewelry.) VIVIAN: This is Gaby Lawson from Wyoming. Emily Temper from New Mexico. And Tamara Fox. Tucson. You recognize the jewelry? (She nods.) VIVIAN: He gave them to you, didn't he? Well, all of these women are dead. And I know that it's hard for you to believe that he'd be involved in something like this, but he is. JACK: So do we have your cooperation? (Sylvia looks at them.) CUT TO: [INT. FBI – TECH ROOM – DAY] LUCY: Transferring to the hard line. (The phone rings.) LUCY: We're in. (Jack turns and looks at Sylvia.) JACK: You can go ahead and answer. (She picks up the phone.) SYLVIA WICKER: (to phone) Hello? TERRY WICKER: (from phone) Hey, Syl, it's me. SYLVIA WICKER: Hi, Terry. How are you? (Lucy follows the trace on the computer.) TERRY WICKER: (from phone) Oh, okay, I guess. Just thought I should check in. LUCY: (quietly) He's using his cell. It's pinging off a tower in South Newark. SYLVIA WICKER: (to phone) Uh ... that, that's great. I-I'm glad. (she looks at Jack) Uh ... I've been, I've been thinking a lot about you, Terry, and ... um ... I don't know. TERRY WICKER: (from phone) You don't know what? What's going on? Are you crying? SYLVIA WICKER: (to phone) No. No, I'm ... it's ... uh ... Are you okay? TERRY WICKER: (from phone) Yeah. You sound kinda strange. (She puts the phone down, shakes her head and looks at Jack.) SYLVIA WICKER: (to phone) I can't. TERRY WICKER: (from phone) Sylvia. What's going on? (Jack takes over.) JACK: Terry ... this is Special Agent Malone from the FBI. Do not hang up. TERRY WICKER: (from phone) Where's Sylvia? JACK: She's sitting here right next to me. Okay? TERRY WICKER: (from phone) You put her back on or I'm hanging up. JACK: No, no, don't you hang up, okay? Right now, I have her for possession of stolen jewelry from the women that you killed. I have enough to charge her as an accessory to murder. TERRY WICKER: (from phone) What do you want? JACK: I want you to let your son go. I want you to turn yourself in. And your sister? She walks. (pause) Look, Terry, I know you want to stop. That's why you called your sister. That's why you took your son. We both know that you're afraid of killing him, too. TERRY WICKER: (from phone) You don't know what you're talking about. JACK: Yes, I think I do know what I'm talking about, and I think you know what I'm talking about. Terry, come on. Listen to me. We can make a deal. CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) – DAY] [EXT. TRAIN YARD -- DAY] (Wicker arrives in the pickup truck. Jack and Martin are already there.) JACK: (from radio) I got a visual on the suspect. Late model pickup. I'm not sure if it's Wicker. Remember, we got to take him alive. He's the only one who knows where the boy is. (Terry Wicker gets out of the truck and meets up with Jack on the train tracks.) JACK: You alone? TERRY WICKER: What do you think? JACK: I got FBI agents crawling all over this place. But they don't do anything unless I say so. TERRY WICKER: Guess that makes you the big boss, huh? JACK: Not right now. Not while you have the boy. Where is he? TERRY WICKER: I need to see my deal. JACK: Yeah, I got it right here. TERRY WICKER: Show me! JACK: Not until I see your son. Where is he? Is he in the truck? TERRY WICKER: Doesn't matter. JACK: It matters to me. You want to cut a deal for your sister or not? I want to see the boy. TERRY WICKER: Believe me, I, I didn't want to hurt him. (Quick flashback to: [EXT. ALLEY – DAY] Earlier that day, Wicker chases after Kobe.) TERRY WICKER: You run away from me, huh?! I mean it! KOBE: No, please, no, please, no please! (Wicker catches up with Kobe on the stairs. He holds the knife up against his neck.) KOBE: I promise! I won't do it again. No. No, please. (crying) I won't do it again. I promise. (Wicker lets him go.) TERRY WICKER: Go. Go. Kobe. Run. (He pushes Kobe away from him.) TERRY WICKER: (shouts) RUN! (Kobe runs. Wicker throws the knife away and watches Kobe run out of the alley.) BACK TO SCENE. JACK: Come on, Terry. You're a cold-blooded killer. You honestly expect me to believe that you just let him walk? TERRY WICKER: He's my son. I couldn't hurt him. JACK: Let's say I believe you. Your sister still wants to know if he's okay. TERRY WICKER: She know what I done? JACK: Hey, I'm not gonna lie to you, Terry. I told her everything. But you have a chance to fix this. TERRY WICKER: What she say when you told her? JACK: Look, I'm not here to talk about your sister, all right? I'm here to close the deal. I want your son. Come on. TERRY WICKER: What am I gonna do now?! Huh? Who do I got left? JACK: You got plenty left, Terry. You can keep your sister out of prison. Just give me your son. TERRY WICKER: Tell her I'm sorry. (Wick pulls out the gun and holds it up against his own temple.) JACK: No! (He shoots and falls to the ground.) (Jack runs past Wicker and heads for the truck. Martin runs to check on Wicker. He picks up the gun near Wicker’s hand as Jack checks the truck.) (Martin checks Wicker’s pulse. He leaves Wicker and heads over to Jack.) JACK: He's not in the truck. MARTIN: You'd think the kid would have gone to the police by now. JACK: He's a kid. He's scared. MARTIN: Where do you think he's hiding? JACK: The one place his father told him he'd be safe. CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) – DAY] [INT. FBI – BULLPEN -- NIGHT] (Vivian looks at the map on the monitor.) VIVIAN: There's a warehouse rail staging area a quarter of a mile east from where Kobe Farentino ran off. It's at Meeker east of Newark Avenue. (She turns to Danny, who is on the phone.) DANNY: (to phone) Okay. Meeker, east of Newark Avenue. Great. (He hangs up.) DANNY: Jack and Martin will be there in twenty minutes. VIVIAN: Okay. CUT TO: [EXT. WAREHOUSE RAIL STAGING AREA -- NIGHT] (The FBI and officer cars arrive at the station. Jack, Martin and the officers get out of their cars and spread out to search for Kobe. Jack and Martin search the cars. Jack finds Kobe sleeping in one of the train cars.) (Kobe gets up and sees them.) JACK: It's okay. We're here to help you. (Jack holds out his hand.) Come here. CUT TO: (Jack carries Kobe to the open ambulance.) (An officer car arrives. Martin opens the door and Sylvia Wicker steps out. She heads over to the ambulance.) (Jack is with Kobe.) JACK: Your aunt's here. Okay? (He steps away and Sylvia walks up to Kobe. She puts a hand on his arm and they talk for a moment. Kobe nods. She holds him as he cries.) (Jack heads over to Martin. Martin nods. He turns and they head to their vehicle.) CUT TO: [EXT. NEW YORK CITY (STOCK) – DAY] [EXT. STREET OUTISDE TAYLOR RESIDENCE – DAY] (Jack parks the FBI car on the curb in front of the Taylor house. Grissom is in the passenger seat.) (They look at the house.) JACK: Six years ago I got a phone call about Jason Taylor, and I drove out here and I looked around and I just thought, "How the hell can anything bad happen here?" It hasn't changed much in six years. GRISSOM: Yeah, well, six years of not knowing must have changed something. JACK: Ever think about hanging it up? GRISSOM: Every day. JACK: Well, at least you got your pig. (Grissom smiles.) GRISSOM: I do, yes. What do you got, Jack? (Jack shakes his head.) JACK: The people that we get back. 'Cause there doesn't seem to be enough of them anymore. (They’re quiet for a moment.) JACK: Want to come in? GRISSOM: I'd rather not. JACK: Me neither. (Jack gets out of the car and heads for the front door. Grissom watches him as Jack takes a moment, then knocks.) (Grissom sighs.) (HOLD ON Grissom.)
